Every time you go into the supermarket the tabloids have Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise on the verge of splits ville. After Tom’s exuberance on Oprah and his romantic proposal to Katie at the Eiffel Tower, all eyes have remained on this couple. Tom gave Katie a simple oval shaped 5 carat diamond for her engagement ring, she gave birth to their daughter and then they got married.

Not quite traditional but this Scientology couple doesn’t seem to lean toward the traditional. I wouldn’t have minded being in this non- conformist couple’s wedding though. Katie apparently bought diamond necklaces for all of her bridesmaids in white gold with diamonds and sapphires.

Despite the rumors of the degree of Katie’s willing participation in this marriage, it is clear that one thing that Tom has not been able to brainwash out of Katie is her sense of good taste and style.

If you grew up dreaming of hearing “Here comes the Bride” while you walked down the aisle wearing a long white dress, then I am betting you have a pretty good idea of what kind of ring that you want. Each engagement ring is different and you should find one that suits your personality.

Did you ever see that Seinfeld episode where George was going to be a hand model? Apparently some companies are willing to pay big bucks to those of you with flawless fingers.

Well my hands aren’t flawless by a long shot. They have tiny scratches from my attempts to be athletic and a few lines as a sign of getting older so I use some sneaky techniques to get some admiration. Instead of wincing when my nails are not perfectly done up, my friends are too busy commenting on my gorgeous rings ( obtained with my lovely little discount of course).

Rings can also be used as a defense against unwanted male attention. My sisters and I have each purchased fake “engagement rings.” Now these are not real diamonds of course but when they rest on our ring finger, most would be Romeos head in the opposite direction.

After sifting through my mother’s jewelry box trying to find a bracelet my dad had given me, I stumbled upon my mother’s cocktail ring. I hadn’t seen here wear it in years and it made me wonder if they were still in fashion.

Cocktail rings were originally popular during the prohibition. You might have been going to drink illegal liquor in a speakeasy but you were doing it dressed to the nines.

Today the cocktail ring is consigned to cocktail parties and lavish events. You could get away with it at movie screenings or extremely fancy dinner parties.
