Fire, Rainbows, Sheer Beauty: Opals (October’s Birthstone)

black opal picture from external siteThe Opal is one of the most beautiful stones I have ever seen. The white or milky opal looks much like a pearl oftentimes, with its smooth lines, cream color, but with a twist: when you look deep into an opal, you see colors and lights that just fascinate mesmerize.

I first found out about the opal when my grandmother gave my mother an opal pendant, because my grandmother (my father’s mother, actually) learned that mother was born in October. Since the opal is October’s birthstone, it was only fitting that gramma gave mother an opal trinket.

Opal and Diamond Pendant in Yellow Gold with ChainI remember being fascinated with the “fire” that the stone seemed to glow with. As opals are known for their multicolored look, the rainbow-like lights that glow within their depths, the characteristic mesmerizing quality that the shifting colors take on, I soon became captivated with opals.

What makes me more fascinated with opals is that they are as “moody” as I am. It’s just a little funny because the moodiness that I see in such a beautiful thing is also the same moodiness that I have. And I am under the firm belief that all women are beautiful creatures. That means I, as a moody woman, am a beautiful creature, as moody/beautiful as any precious opal in this world.

With the fire, the radiance, the mesmerizing qualities of the captivating opals, a woman who owns one should cherish every piece of precious opal that she owns. Opals happen to like being worn, because its high water content needs maintenance. Constantly wearing it keeps it moist. Setting your opals aside would render them dry and brittle.

So ladies, cherish your opals, take care of them, and wear them constantly, so they won’t feel neglected. ;)

Hi Girls

opal ringI just love Kate Hudson’s bohemian style. She tends to wear scarves, handkerchiefs and big chunky jewelry. One ring in particular that caught my eye was the opal ring that she sometimes sports. This free spirit loves to buy quirky, unique jewelry and even makes some of her own.

opal earrringsTry pairing a white gypsy dress with a hand kerchief in your hair and some opal earrings to get her look. Remember simple funky jewelry is the key to accentuating this simple look.
